Intercultural Mentoring: Socializing Events

Socializing Events in winter term 2020/21

Connect Gamenight

Although all of our in-person events were cancelled this semester, it didn’t stop us from us getting together and finding a way to enjoy each other’s company. We couldn’t have been happier to see all of you who joined! More than 60 participants registered for our Gamingnights Connect on 16th December 2020 and 27th January 2021. This game that can be played online or in-person all about sparking thoughtful conversation.

After a short introduction of all participants and a warm welcome from the team we enjoyed a short impulse lecture of our student assistant and former mentee Johanna. She reflected about her experiences as an international student regarding having a good conversation. She is convinced that the “quality of your relationships depends on the quality of your questions”.

Our game CONNECT consists of these questions which lead into good conversation. It has 3 levels: The first level “Warm up” allows to get to know each other. The groups were put into different breakout sessions and started talking about these questions. When they came back to all they decided to stay within their groups to play level 2 “Going deeper”. These questions lead into deeper conversation and the most important lesson was that you have to be open, but also willing to listen. The game also offers a third level “Connect” which is more about reflection and we think it might be a nice outside of the gaming event to have that option when there is just a mentor or mentee - either in-person or virtually!  Check our pdf and play it anytime you like. We wish you lots of fun!

Socializing Events in 2019/20

Schlossberg Walk

On Sunday our first socializing event “Walk to Schlossberg” took place. Kindly one of our mentors organized the hike which many mentors and mentees joined. The walk started in the city center and ended up with an amazing view over the whole city Freiburg. Thanks to the nice autumnal weather we were able to see till the wine region Kaiserstuhl and the behind laying Vosges. For the participants the walk was a great opportunity to get to know other participants of the Intercultural Mentoring Program and to enjoy good company. We think that it was a pleasant experience for our participants to switch off from studying and spend a day in the nature amongst other international students.

Pub Crawl - a mentor reports...

I was walking towards the building of KG 2, as it was the place where we would meet for the Pub Crawl. I was nervous but excited at the same time, because I wanted to meet new people, but knew that I will have to step out of my comfort zone to communicate in another language.

When I arrived the feeling I felt and thoughts I had before were completely gone. From the beginning everyone was friendly and it was easier to talk than I thought. We have started the evening with a ‘Get to know each other’ game, which made me realize that every participant came from all over the world, so that means I am not foreigner alone. It was exciting to chat with people from Egypt, to talk about climate change with a Swedish girl and about food with guys from India.

In the first pub, we sat around a big table and only stopped talking to order drinks. As it was a Monday evening, the El Bolero bar offered a game where we could throw a dice, which decided the price of our cocktail. I really liked this idea because we were all students and it saved us quite some money.

The Pub Crawl wasn’t only about meeting new people but tasting different kinds of drinks, symbolizing the diversity of cultures. So we tried out many types of German beers and wine as well.

All in all, the pub crawl was successful. We really enjoyed the evening and everyone went home with a big smile.

Intercultural Dinner

On the 22nd of November many mentors and mentees gathered to share a meal together. Although the Intercultural Dinner took place in one of the seminar rooms of the university, the smell of different cuisines, happy chatter and pleasant music completely changed the atmosphere.

Colourful dishes have slowly started to fill the table. There was a wide variety of food from India, Palestine, China and Hungary, just to name a few. Every cuisine had its own special flavour and it was interesting to see how eating habits differ. Every dinner participant told something about their dish; how it symbolizes their home, how they prepared it or how often do they eat it.

The food and stories have coloured and brought all the participants together. It was a great intercultural experience and a lovely evening, after all!

Walk through the Christmas market

The smell of roasted almonds and hot mulled wine attracted our mentees and mentors to visit the Freiburger Christmas market on Monday evening. Although the weather was quite cold, we spent a few hours in great company. Starting with a hot mulled wine and ending up with a few more, we had great chats about German Christmas traditions, Christmas markets in different cities around Freiburg and the experiences we made within the Intercultural Mentoring Program so far.

As the walk through the Christmas market was our last socializing event in this winter term, we wish everyone a merry Christmas and a good start in 2020!!
